Ice Cap Cannibalism - Another unfortunate feedback loop
The black soot that now covers much of Greenland's surface has changed the properties of the ice cap. It now absorbs more solar radiation and reflects back less, causing the ice caps to shrink even more rapidly. The more ice that melts, the less there is to reflect the sun, causing a classic feedback loop and incidentally, sending more melt into the oceans and changing the salinity of the oceans.
In spite of what the GOP claims, the seas are rising.
May 2017: "The Arctic is unraveling," according to Rafe Pomerance, quoted at Nature.com. The region is warming more than twice as fast as the rest of the planet, and the predicted ice melt and sea level rise is happening more rapidly than previously predicted. The new estimate for an ice free summer north pole is 2030.
