About That Weird Warm Water Anomaly of the West Coast

An Area of Water 1000 miles in Radius With Water Temperatures 2 – 7F Warmer Than The Surrounding Seas

warm water anomalyPossible explanation of the California mega-drought and New England’s scary winter

A huge mass of inexplicably warm water is sitting about 1,000 miles off the west coast of North America. According to published reports in Geophysical Research Letters*, a number of science journals, the surface waters in the more or less circular area are anywhere from 2 – 7 degree F warmer than the surrounding ocean. A patch of water that warm more than 1,000 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep is definitely enough to affect the climate, or the weather, but whatever you want to call it, that’s what seems to be happening. There is the apocalyptically hot and dry weather that has driven California to the brink of a megadrought. And there is the frightningly cold and snow weather on the East Coast. According to lead author Nick Bond (University of Washington), the warm water “blob” is warmer than ever observed previously for the season.

AND IT’S NOT ONLY THE WEATHER
Unfortunately, the warm water blob is messing up more than just the weather. Well before the warm water mass was discovered, scientists on the west coast had noted a wide range of unusual patterns in the marine food web, including die-offs of sea lion pups and mass migrations north to cooler waters. Swim while you can, little fishes!
