Argentina Ag Land Clearing Takes A Chunk Out of Remaining Forests

GMO Soybean Operations Drive Illegal-ish Land Clearing and a “Forest Destruction Emergency”

Argentina deforestation

Argentina has destroyed about 7.5 million hectares of the Great Chaco forest ecosystem since 1990 and there is little prospect for improvement. Most of the activity takes place in the northeast, in Salta, Santiago Del Estero, Chaco and Formosa provinces.

The driving economic forces are production of GMO soy operations and cattle ranching, which are backed by large corporate interests. Occasionally there is a token enforcement and a small fine, followed by a return to business as usual.
