A species that traces its roots back the the early Miocene was wiped out by the particularly rapacious species that inhabits Australia and Tasmania in the early years of the 20th century. Thylacinus cynocephalus, otherwise known as the Tasmanian Tiger, was the largest carnivorous marsupial of the modern era. The Tasmanian Tiger was primarily hunted out of existence, along with human introduced disease and habitat destruction.

Benjamin, the last known thylacine, died at the Beaumaris Zoo in 1933.
