Jan 2013 – A government minister announced an annual death toll in the thousands as Tehran’s embattled citizens stayed inside rather than venture forth into the poisonous air. Officials compared venturing outside to suicide.

Beyond the fact that the Islamic Republic’s capital simply has too many cars, an international embargo on gasoline has driven Iran to refine their own blend of car fuel for domestic consumption. The atmosphere in this mega-city contains ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter.

The New York Times reports that Tehran’s pollution is four times that of Los Angeles, and worse than Mexico City, Shanghai, and Bangkok.
