A record 22 Cyclones reached the Category 4 or Category 5 level during the 2015 hurricane season.

The spectacular nature of the season was punctuated in September with the simultaneous appearance of three Cat 4 storms in the central Pacific. Sept 5 September 2015 opened with hurricanes* Ignacio, Kilo and Jimena dominating the central Pacific Ocean. According to NASA, this was the first time three Cat 4 hurricanes have appeared in the Pacific simultaneously.


* Foreigners call these storms typhoons or cyclones, but they are actually hurricanes
